Sam Allardyce picks manager he thinks Newcastle should hire, discusses Steven Gerrard

that he thinks Newcastle United should look at hiring Frank Lampard – but says Steven Gerrard will stay at Rangers.

Lampard, 43, is currently without a job after impressing as Chelsea gaffer before the transfer ban ended. Then, numerous new players came in.

It took the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and more to gel – but not quick enough to save Lampard. He was sacked, and has been out of work since.

The England and Chelsea legend has been linked with the Newcastle job, among others, since his exit. Eddie Howe is believed to be the favourite.

It comes after Unai Emery ruled out a move to Newcastle, despite some reports saying he had agreed a wage and relegation release clause.

Asked about Lampard and Gerrard, Allardyce said Gerrard will not leave Rangers – but Lampard would jump at the chance to manage Newcastle.

I don’t think Steven would leave Rangers at this point, winning every week to fight at the bottom of the Premier League,” Allardyce said.

“If I were Frank I’d jump at the chance. He’s rested, gained experience at Derby and Chelsea – his first season was brilliant – he needs to fight back.”

Newcastle ideal for Lampard, but is Lampard right for Newcastle?

Lampard’s CV is a short one when it comes to managerial expertise, and experience. He knows little about a relegation scrap, throughout his career.

Playing for Chelsea nearly his entire career, Lampard never really experienced fighting the drop. As a manager, it is a similar story.

He fought for promotion at Derby, and the top four at Chelsea. He is a good manager, but perhaps not one that is ideal for Newcastle right now.

Howe is a much better option – given he has spent years keeping Bournemouth in the Premier League, before the eventually went down.

Lampard would get fans on side, play exciting football and bring players in – but Howe would keep Newcastle in the division.
