Sam Allardyce has transfer advice for Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp
that Liverpool need to buy big in the summer in order to keep their current stars on their toes, and maintain this season’s success for years to come – or face the prospect of dropping off, like Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Watford, Liverpool remain 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with just 10 league games to play. They also remain competitive in the Champions League and FA Cup, having won the Club World Cup.
Manchester City have won the Carabao Cup, but Liverpool look likely to end their 30-year wait for a Premier League title. The Reds have not made a big-money signing since bringing in Alisson, Fabinho and Naby Keita in the summer of 2018.
Ex-Everton and England manager Allardyce reckons Liverpool will need to get the cheque book out in the summer, in order to challenge the current Liverpool squad – or end up struggling to maintain their form, like Spurs.

“I think they should go out and buy big,” . “Historically, when you look at a team that doesn’t buy, they start failing quickly. They’ve got away with two windows, but they have got to think of the future and buy one or two a season.
“Their squad needs challenging by some big players. Where do you get them from? Over the last couple of seasons, they haven’t messed up in the transfer windows. They need challenging. If you stand still, you fail – Tottenham are a perfect example.”
TBR’s view – Allardyce has hit the nail on the head
Tottenham came within an inch of pipping Leicester City to the 2015-16 Premier League title and have finished in the top four since, reaching last season’s final. But this season, they will do well to finish fifth.
If Liverpool are to avoid dropping off like Spurs, they need to bring in some big-money signings – something Spurs did not do – in order to keep the competitiveness up within the squad. That would bring the best out of Klopp’s current stars.
