Sam Allardyce deserves credit for his Dominic Calvert-Lewin assessment
Everton rewarded Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his excellent recent form this week with a new and improved contract at Goodison Park.
The 22-year-old has signed a new deal keeping him at the club until the summer of 2025.
It comes after a brilliant run of form under new boss Carlo Ancelotti, which has seen his goal tally for the season rise to 15 goals in 31 games.
But one former Everton manager predicted that ‘DCL’ had this sort of level in his arsenal.
Sam Allardyce was never a popular figure at Everton, however, he did get some excellent performances out of Calvert-Lewin. He also rested the youngster when needed, as he clearly started to struggle with the workload of playing week-in week-out. Indeed, Calvert-Lewin was man-of-the-match and scored in Big Sam’s first game in charge of Everton back in December 2017.
Allardyce left Everton at the end of that season and has since been a regular . Last April, he made some comments about Calvert-Lewin ‘competing alongside Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane’ which, at the time, were not given much credit. Now, they look rather prophetic.
“Calvert-Lewin has improved immensely this season and next season he might even improve yet again.
“I think he’s a quality player, but he’s still a little short on his goal tally to command that centre forward position on a regular basis.
“But he may do it next season.”
Calvert-Lewin has added the lethal edge to his game that was lacking but now he is scoring goals, added to his immense pace, strength, and work-rate, Everton have a potential superstar in their ranks.
Allardyce, along with many others, deserves some credit for helping him along that path.
