Ryan Mason says Tottenham defender has “trained hard” this week

Tottenham interim boss Ryan Mason has singled out Matt Doherty for special praise after his work in training this week.

The 29-year-old is available again for this Sunday’s Premier League game against Sheffield United after recovering from an injury problem that has seen him sidelined in recent matches.

Mason has explained that the Irish defender has caught the eye on the training pitch:

“[Doherty] is a top professional, he has trained hard this week and he has been excellent,” he said in his press conference, as quoted by .

Doherty, who joined for £15million () from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, has had an underwhelming first season at the north London Club.

As a right wing-back for Wolves, he was one of the standout full-backs in the Premier League during the 2019/20 campaign, and ended up making his big transfer.

However, his displays as a more conventional right-back in a Spurs shirt have been miles off the standard, and he’s looked a real weak link at times.

TBR’s View:

If you are to get the best out of Doherty in a Spurs shirt, perhaps the next Tottenham manager will have to be one who prefers to implement a defensive system that includes wing-backs.

The Republic of Ireland internatonal has played 27 games across all competitions this season, and positionally looks a liability at right-back.

He’s a player with a superb work rate and tenacity, so he’ll be hoping that a change of manager can help him hit the rest button next year for his second season at the club.
