Ryan Fredericks injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for West Ham
West Ham United defender Ryan Fredericks is facing some weeks out of action with injury, after he collided with Manchester City midfielder Rodri on Wednesday.
The full-back was forced from the field during the second half of the Premier League clash and t he has sustained ligament damage.
The player is ‘undergoing further assessment’, and details of a return date should be announced soon by the club.
It’s a bitter blow for Fredericks, who missed four league games in January with a hamstring injury.
Given the Hammers’ precarious position in the table, losing Fredericks is far from ideal, but hopefully it will be a case of weeks and not months for the Englishman.
The injury comes at the absolute worst possible time for West Ham, with runaway league leaders Liverpool up next for David Moyes’ side.
The man who will likely be operating down the left for the Reds is the electric Sadio Mane, and Fredericks’ pace is going to be a major miss.
TBR’s view – Zabaleta vs Mane would be a mismatch
The man who replaced Fredericks on Wednesday was Pablo Zabaleta.
As good a player as he once was, the Argentine is obviously now a veteran who is alarmingly lacking in the pace department.
Moyes matching him up against £100,000-a-week star Mane () on Monday would be gross mismanagement, with the Senegal superstar one of the quickest and most dangerous players in the division.
It would be a total mismatch, and the Scot needs to strongly consider picking someone else, or having Zabaleta and another player double up at all times.
