Ryan Christie must prove his consistency to earn himself a new deal

Ryan Christie reminded Brendan Rodgers of his talents with a man of the match display in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

Christie scored a terrific long-range goal and played a part in the two others after coming on at half-time on Sunday.

After replacing the injured Olivier Ntcham, Christie won the penalty which led to the opener.

He then sent a shot at goal which was fumbled by Hearts goalkeeper Zdenek Zlamal before James Forrest knocked it in.

And then he capped a fine performance with a goal of his own; a sumptuous left-footed strike from range.

And with his contract running out at the end of this season, it was a timely reminder of Christie’s abilities.

The talented midfielder will be desperate to stay at Celtic Park and establish himself in the first-team.

But now he needs to prove that he can perform at this level every week.

And he has the perfect opportunity to do just that with Scott Brown, Ntcham and Eboue Kouassi all potentially out injured.

Celtic’s midfield ranks are depleted. So Rodgers will be hoping Christie can step up and ease his selection headaches.

This is Christie’s last opportunity to secure his future at Celtic and he knows it.

The 23-year-old will surely be determined to prove he is good enough to remain at Celtic and earn a contract extension.
