Ryan Babel and Jermaine Jenas comments on Tottenham star’s Instagram post
Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has come in for huge praise as he starred at the back once again during his side’s Champions League triumph – and he posted on Instagram after the match.
The 30-year-old started the match alongside Jan Vertonghen in a back four for Spurs. Although Manchester City scored four times and had one disallowed, he made a number of crucial blocks and interceptions.
The former Ajax defender’s future at Spurs remains in doubt, with the player only having a contract with the north London side until the summer of 2020. It is also believed a £25million release clause is included in his deal.
Alderweireld posted on Instagram, celebrating Tottenham’s win and informing Ajax that their “boys are coming home”, with Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen and Davinson Sanchez all joining Spurs from Ajax.
Holland international and former Ajax man Ryan Babel congratulated Alderweireld, while ex-Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas commented saying: “what a performance”.
TBR’s view
If Spurs needed any more proof about how important Alderweireld is to the club, Wednesday night showed it. His passionate, hard-working and intelligent defending was just as important as Spurs’ goals.
Similarly, though, any interested parties watching the match will be thinking Alderweireld’s £25million release clause is a bargain. Manchester United could be one of those.
Spurs have to hand Alderweireld a new, much-improved contract that does not include the clause.
