‘Ruthless’ £25m striker wants to play Champions League football with Aston Villa keen on him
Aston Villa have been one of the most active Premier League teams in the summer transfer window.
With Champions League football on the horizon, Unai Emery clearly felt his squad needed bolstering so he’s brought in eight new additions.
Aston Villa aren’t finished with their business just yet, either, as they look to bring in another striker before the window slams shut on August 30th.
With that said, it’s just emerged that one of their rumoured targets wants to play in the Champions League…

Jean-Philippe Mateta wants Champions League football
Aston Villa made contact to sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta earlier in the summer transfer window.
Mateta, who’s been labelled ‘ruthless’ per , enjoyed a phenomenal campaign last term, netting 19 times whilst laying on five assists for The Eagles.
The 27-year-old was selected to represent France at the Olympic Games in Paris and fired in five goals in six outings.
So evidently, he’s in the form of his life such is why he now wants to play Champions League football, according to South London Press journalist Edmund Brack.
Crystal Palace trying to get Jean-Philippe Mateta to sign new deal
Brack also noted that Palace are failing in their attempts to renew Mateta’s current deal, which is due to expire in 2026.
That could force their hand to sell him on this summer whilst his stock is at an all-time high, so Villa should test the waters with an opening offer.
According to , Mateta is valued at around £25m, which seems pretty low given how productive his 2024 has been.
