‘Rule me out’: 53-year-old says he won’t be Southampton’s next manager
Tim Sherwood believes Southampton should appoint Sean Dyche as their new manager and says he would not take the job.
The Saints Ralph Hasenhuttl after Sunday’s 4-1 defeat against Newcastle United and it seems Nathan Jones is going to be the new man in the hotseat.
But Sherwood, 53, suggested that they need someone with Premier League experience to ensure survival come the end of the season.
He told the he would not take the job – and also joked that he knew he was not about to be offered it either.
Sherwood on Southampton job
He said: “It’s a very similar job now someone going into Southampton to when I went into Aston Villa.
“Now, as soon as you get the phone call from the team, you look at the squad of players and decide whether you can keep them in the league.
“I’m someone who wants to go in there and be successful and tell the owner the correct stuff, not just to get the job. If it was me and I owned the football club, I wouldn’t have made the change.
“The criteria at this stage is to stay in the Premier League. I would have stuck with him. If you’re going to go short-term, you have to go to a Dyche, someone who knows how to keep a team in the league. Sean might look at it and say ‘that’s not a group of players I can work with’.
“Nathan Jones knows nothing about the Premier League. It’s almost like a different sport to the Championship, where he’s been successful with a small club.”
When asked if he would take the job, he replied “No. I ain’t getting offered it.
“Do I think I could keep them in the Premier League? I really don’t know, if I was honest. I wouldn’t be as sure as I was when I went to Villa. Let’s rule me out!”
Hasenhuttl’s job security has seemed precarious for a while now, with his team always seeming to produce a result when they needed it the most.
They didn’t manage that at the weekend and the club clearly felt it was time for a change of ideas to alter the mood around the club.
Is the Premier League a ‘different sport’ to the Championship? Probably not, and there are plenty of players and managers who have made the jump.
It seems Southampton were aware of who they wanted to go for if they got rid of Hasenhuttl and they have moved swiftly to get Jones into position, and there is definitely another way to stay up than appointing an established Premier League manager and taking a short-term approach.
