Roy Keane slams Spurs player during Leicester loss

Roy Keane that it was madness from Serge Aurier to commit the foul that saw a penalty given against Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s clash with Leicester City.

It had appeared that the game was heading into half-time still goalless. However, a collision between Aurier and Wesley Fofana around the edge of the box led to the VAR awarding a penalty.

It seemed to be a strange decision for Aurier to challenge for the ball. Fofana was in the corner of the box. And he had his back to goal.

So it is probably little surprise that Keane was not at all impressed by the Spurs right-back’s decision to barge into his opponent.

“There is a word: madness,” . “I want to be careful with what I say about this defender, I’ve been on this road before with him.

“Utter madness. There’s no danger, he’s not in on goal. He’s not looking at the ball. Experienced player. Madness.”

The incident perhaps issues a reminder of the gamble Tottenham are taking by putting their faith in Aurier.

There is no question that he has been outstanding for much of this season. And he deserves enormous credit for forcing his way into Jose Mourinho’s plans after Spurs signed one of the Premier League’s best right-backs in the summer.

But Aurier – who earns £70,000-a-week, – has not always had the best spell in North London. There have been costly errors during his time at the club. And Sunday’s foul proved to be an extremely harmful mistake.

Of course, players have to be allowed to make mistakes. But Aurier now has a point to prove after what had largely been a superb run of form up until Sunday.
