Roy Keane says he warned Tottenham against signing £6m player in the past

Away from all of the business Tottenham Hotspur have been doing in January, Roy Keane has now recalled a high-profile move from the past.

Back in the days of Harry Redknapp, Spurs were shrewd operators in the transfer market, much like they are today.

Redknapp was probably proud of Tottenham’s ninth-hour bid which saw Radu Dragusin choose the club over Bayern Munich yesterday.

That being said, Roy Keane has actually now shared a story of when he thought Tottenham made a big mistake.

Keane was speaking on the ‘’ podcast and told an anecdote that will perk the ears of those watching the Premier League in the late 2000s.

The pundit recalled a time when he warned Spurs against re-signing his former Sunderland player Pascal Chimbonda, only for them to go ahead and do it anyway.

Speaking on the podcast, Keane was bemused by Spurs’ decision to re-sign the full-back.

He said: “Chimbonda, I brought him in, and people had said don’t touch him but I thought we needed him. He had quality.

“He came in and he was hard work, and I’m being really polite, he was hard work and not a great lad around the place. He could play. But I didn’t listen to people, I thought we needed him.

“But I remember I left Sunderland and I got a phone call from Spurs, one of the coaching staff, and he’d already been at Spurs, and I went ‘oh Chimbonda, I wouldn’t be sure’.

“But the next day they brought him in. Harry Redknapp was the manager. I was like, why ring people and get feedback?”

Times have changed

Making 103 appearances for Spurs in total, only five of those came in his second spell with the club.

It’s probably fair to say that Chimbonda’s Tottenham return didn’t quite work out as well as hoped, a move Keane was convinced was a bad idea.

That being said, with Spurs’ new transfer committee today, they are running a very smooth operation.

Fabio Paratici is still pulling a lot of strings behind the scenes, and he’s complimented by several other decision makers at the club.

That being said, it was Ange Postecoglou who deserves credit for one excellent deal in the summer
