Roy Keane responds when asked about potential Arsenal title challenge

Roy Keane has told (broadcast on Sky Sports; 10/10; 19:37) that Arsenal are, without a doubt, the biggest threat to challenge Manchester City in the Premier League title race following their win on Sunday.

The Gunners are absolutely flying at the start of this campaign. Mikel Arteta’s men sit top of the table having won eight of their opening nine games.

There has been a reluctance to suggest that Arsenal in the title race. Obviously, their supporters will be wary of getting too carried away. And it does appear that Manchester City have an ability to reach another level to any other side in the country.

Having said that, Arsenal do not appear to be going away anytime soon. And they made perhaps their biggest statement yet on Sunday as they beat Liverpool at the Emirates.

The Reds have been poor this season. Nevertheless, any victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side is an impressive one. And it was almost all the more significant as they were pegged back on two occasions before getting the winner.

The result saw Arsenal return to the summit. And Keane suggested that the Gunners are most definitely the side best placed to rival Pep Guardiola’s men.

“Yeah at the moment, without a doubt. They’re playing with confidence. Even the game they played against United, they played quite well in the game. It was just one of those where obviously United beat them on the counter attack,” he told .

“They’re playing with confidence, they’ve got a bit of physicality in the team, in the two centre-halves. I know they have a mistake in them, but there’s that physical presence. They’ve got good experience in midfield, they’ve got young players full of energy, full of talent. They’re scoring goals.

“You mentioned the atmosphere at the ground. It’s electric, they’ve got that momentum. So at this time, they’re obviously the biggest threat to Man City.”

The smart money still suggests that Manchester City will have too much for Arsenal. The Cityzens have a frightening amount of depth. And of course, they know what it takes to get across the line in a title race – no matter how tense it gets.

But Arsenal have already surprised many on a number of occasions this season. So they will not mind one bit seeing people anticipating that the wheels are coming off at some stage.

There is little pressure on the Gunners right now. They have made huge strides of progress. And it appears to have the potential to be a really special spell for the club.

Certainly, if it is not going to be Arsenal, it is hard to see anyone else getting close to City this season.
