Roy Keane and Jamie O’Hara share whether Aston Villa deserved penalty against Manchester City

Aston Villa took on Manchester City in Tuesday night’s Premier League encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City took the lead in the seventh minute, Omar Marmoush cutting the ball back – via a slight deflection – for Bernardo Silva to slam home.

However, Aston Villa equalised in controversial circumstances when Ruben Dias bundled Jacob Ramsey down in the box, which prompted a VAR check.

Referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot after seeing the replay, and Marcus Rashford slotted from 12 yards out to bring the Villans back into the game.

Pep Guardiola was visibly furious – as were the City fans – after the replay was shown on the big screen at the ground.

Pundits Roy Keane and Jamie O’Hara both gave their verdicts on the decision to award Villa a penalty.

Roy Keane and Jamie O’Hara agree with Aston Villa penalty decision against Manchester City

Keane, speaking on Sky Sports, said he agreed with the referee’s decision.

Whilst Keane acknowledged that City and Guardiola were fuming, he felt Ramsey was taken out by Dias and the decision was right.

“I know City are fuming but he takes him out,” said Keane, as per .

“Pep is frustrated but I think it’s a penalty. It was a big moment for Rashford.”

Meanwhile, O’Hara took to X with his take on the incident, and he was even more emphatic than Keane in believing it was the right call.

“Not sure what they all moaning about,” he said. “It’s a stonewall penalty.”

In the end, the decision did not prove costly for City, who scored a late winner through Matheus Nunes.

The Premier League Match Centre took to X to stress that there was a “clear trip” on Ramsey, which warranted an on-field review.

“VAR OVERTURN,” they wrote.

“VAR checked the referee’s call of no penalty to Aston Villa for a challenge by Dias on Ramsey – and deemed there was a clear trip and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee overturned the original decision and awarded a penalty to Aston Villa.”

Who Aston Villa and Manchester City face in the Premier League run-in

Aston Villa’s next game is in the FA Cup, where they take on Crystal Palace for the right to contest the final – which could see them up against City again.

The Villans then take on Fulham, Bournemouth, Tottenham and Manchester United in a tricky run-in, with their Champions League hopes in the balance.

Likewise, City are next in FA Cup action when they take on Nottingham Forest, after which they face Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton, Bournemouth and Fulham.

Villa have done well in the Premier League for the most part but, unless they turn things round in the run-in, they’ll miss out on the top-level European adventure they had this year.

Meanwhile, the Citizens have had a poor season by their standards, but it looks as though they could finish it on a high note.
