Rangers fans would be forgiven for feeling somewhat relieved about Alfredo Morelos’s future after hearing Ross Wilson’s comments – – suggesting that the Gers are under no pressure to sell any of their players.
Morelos has been outstanding this season. And Rangers supporters may well feel that keeping the Colombian for the campaign is going to be vitally important to their title hopes.
But the club’s sporting director appears to have rubbished any suggestion that Morelos could leave in the winter.
“We understand that, like every other club in world football, there comes a point when players have to move on to something else for a variety of reasons,” he said, .
“We’ll be no different to that, but it’s certainly not on the horizon in January.
“The first-team has a number of players who could be really interesting for a number of clubs because the club is in a significantly better position than it was before and a lot of that is down to the recruitment and the work Steven and the coaching staff have done with the players.”
Given Morelos’s form, it is easy to forget that the striker is not going to be the only player that Wilson may be referring to when he talks about players staying beyond January.
But his comments also suggest that Rangers fans may have little to worry about following a recent report concerning one of Morelos’s teammates.
Potential Kamara hint?
that Wilson had identified Lewis Ferguson as a potential January target with Rangers open to selling Glen Kamara in the winter.
Kamara has been an inspired signing for the Light Blues. And while a massive profit on the £50,000 fee they spent in January looks inevitable, Gers fans will surely want to see the Finland international stay for as long as possible.
Of course, Rangers could receive a ridiculous offer for Kamara that forces a change of plan. But Wilson’s comments hint that any side looking to sign him in January should forget about a deal.
Rangers fans will probably accept that players such as Morelos and Kamara will leave at some stage. But if they can leave having helped the Gers win a Scottish Premiership crown and book a Champions League return, Steven Gerrard’s men will stand a much better chance of thriving after they have gone.
Wilson’s comments suggest that he does not want a key player to go while there is unfinished business. And that should only be good news for Rangers as they continue to push for major honours.
