Ronald Koeman pinpoints two major flaws in Ryan Gravenberch despite recent Liverpool form
Ryan Gravenberch has enjoyed a new lease of life under Arne Slot, having started each of Liverpool’s three Premier League games so far.
Deployed in the base of the midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister, Gravenberch has delivered a string of assured displays and is one of the first names on the team sheet for the new manager.
He produced arguably his best performance in a Liverpool shirt against Manchester United in the 3-0 win at Old Trafford last week and has been called up by the Netherlands for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games.
Liverpool fans might be incredibly happy with the Dutchman, but Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman believes the 23-year-old still has a lot of room for improvement.

Ronald Koeman makes harsh claim on Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch
Speaking at a press conference ahead of their Nations League games against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany, Koeman pinpointed two big deficiencies in Gravenberch’s gameplay, although he did acknowledge that he has always rated him highly.
“It may be a bit of confidence that he is getting. He started earlier than some other internationals. Maybe the penny will drop now,” Koeman said via .
“We have always seen a lot of potential in Ryan. A lot of people thought, including me, that a bit of concentration, the laziness, could be improved in him.”
“It seems that he realises what is required of the midfield of Liverpool in the Premier League. If a player is given the confidence or the chance, that can be the push in the right direction.”
Gravenberch has a point to prove to Koeman
Gravenberch has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season and has made the number six position his own under Slot.
Liverpool tried and failed to sign Martin Zubimendi earlier this summer and the Spaniard’s decision to snub a move to Anfield has worked in Gravenberch’s favour.
He was called up for the Euro 2024 squad by Koeman but didn’t play a single minute in Germany. However, things could look a little different this time around as he’s been a key player for arguably one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Steven Nicol admits Gravenberch has proved him wrong, so if he carries on in the same vein, his national team boss could change his mind as well.
Gravenberch has all the tools to succeed as a number six for Liverpool
Liverpool don’t have an out-and-out number six but if the first three games are anything to go by, Gravenberch has the qualities to succeed in that role.
Last season under Jurgen Klopp, the Dutchman started just 12 Premier League games and flattered to deceive as he struggled with injuries and inconsistency.
Now, he seems to have settled into the club and the arrival of Slot has proved to be a blessing for him.
Gabriel Agbonlahor feels Gravenberch was outstanding against Manchester United and absolutely dominated Casemiro when Liverpool made the trip to Old Trafford, which is a huge feather in his cap considering the pedigree of his Brazilian counterpart.
The 23-year-old will aim to keep up his rich vein of form as Liverpool look to shape a new era under Slot.
