Tottenham do have competition for the 23-year-old, but if they move Romano has suggested that they may have an advantage in the race.

“Fabio Paratici wanted him at Juventus last summer, he was close. So Paratici always admired Aouar, but at the moment I am told there is nothing advanced,” Romano said.

“For sure Paratici has a good relationship with his agents, they are the same agents of Weston McKennie who signed for Juventus. He is in good relationship with his agency. He knows the player, but for the moment it is not advanced.

“I think Aouar has chances to leave Lyon this summer if the right deal arrives.

“My only question mark is about Champions League football because last summer he said no because he was not convinced about Arsenal opportunity because he wanted Champions League football.”

What would he add to Spurs?

If Aouar was to arrive at Tottenham he could offer them an injection of creativity in midfield.

The 23-year-old would arrive on the back of a season where he fell short of expectations, though.

Aouar was regarded as one of the top talents in European football back in the 2019/20 campaign, but failed to have the same impact last time around.

As a result his value has dropped significantly, which has put him into Tottenham’s price-bracket.

But it also means that the transfer looks far more of a gamble than it once did.

And while there is some appeal to the potential move, there is also a fair element of risk with it too.
