Romano says Leeds have moved closer to Aaronson deal this summer

Fabrizio Romano that Brenden Aaronson joining Leeds United has moved closer now that Jesse Marsch has taken over from Marcelo Bielsa.

Aaronson is a player Leeds fans have heard a lot about over the last few months. Reports claimed that he was their top target during the January transfer window. And a £20 million bid was made.

However, Red Bull Salzburg rejected the offers from the Whites. Aaronson has enjoyed a ‘‘ season, scoring five and contributing nine assists in all competitions.

Of course, Bielsa was the head coach looking to sign the 21-year-old in January. It was announced on Sunday however, that he has been sacked.

His replacement is Marsch, who arrives after spells with RB Leipzig and Salzburg before that. In fact, it was during the 48-year-old’s time in charge that Aaronson moved to Austria.

Leeds do tend to keep their targets on the radar for some time. So it already appeared likely that the Whites would make a fresh move for the 21-year-old in the summer.

Clearly, with Marsch now in place at Elland Road, those connections are now much stronger. And following the American’s appointment, Romano was asked whether Aaronson moving to Leeds has now moved closer.

“My answer is yes, because the relationship is great. Let me say, and it’s good news for Leeds fans, many players speak very highly of Jesse Marsch,” .

“They wanted him in January with Marcelo Bielsa. And I’m sure they still want him and they will try for him in the summer. A lot of it will depend on whether Leeds stay in the Premier League or not, because I think Aaronson is a player for the Premier League, not the Championship.”

Signing Aaronson would be an exciting statement from Leeds – and would also suggest that early stages of Marsch tenure have been success

Leeds fans may have had concerns about whether they had missed the boat on signing Aaronson after failing to land him in January.

He looks an outstanding talent. And he is playing Champions League football with Salzburg. They have a second-leg of their last 16 tie with Bayern Munich ahead.

Leeds meanwhile, have been struggling. There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding what position they will be in this summer.

So it would be incredibly exciting if they managed to land Aaronson. It would likely be a sign that they remain a Premier League side and the early stages of Marsch’s tenure have been a success.
