Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez this summer, but it looks like Manchester United are keen to sign him too.

Reports revealed last week that Mikel Arteta really wants to sign the versatile Argentinian defender in the coming weeks. even claimed that Arsenal had a £25.7 million bid rejected by Ajax for Martinez, who still has three years left on his contract.

Then, it was claimed that the Gunners have made a second bid to sign the South American – this time, in the region of £30 million. Ajax’s response to that remains unclear now, but Fabrizio Romano has just shared a worrying update to Arsenal supporters.

Manchester United, now under Erik Ten Hag, are also reportedly looking to sign Martinez in the coming weeks.

Speaking on the , Romano claimed that Ten Hag, who managed Martinez at Ajax, has already mentioned the defender’s name to Manchester United’s board during transfer discussions.

He said: “Lisandro Martinez is a target for Arsenal. They made a verbal proposal, not an official proposal. €30 million (£25.7m) and Ajax said no. They want way more than this.

“It’s true that Manchester United are interested in Lisandro Martinez. It’s true that Erik Ten Hag mentioned his name to the board.

“Still no bid from Man United, still no new bid from Arsenal, but many things can happen for Lisandro in the coming days.”

This really is worrying news for Arsenal – not because they can’t compete with Manchester United, but because of Erik Ten Hag.

The Dutch manager was the man who bought Martinez to Ajax from Argentinian club Defensa y Justicia in 2019. He gave him his Ajax debut and played a huge part in helping the defender become the player he is today.

To add to that, if Martinez joins Manchester United, he will likely get a lot more game time there than at Arsenal. Harry Maguire looks nothing like his previous self, while Raphael Varane has had his struggles. It’s fairly easy to break into that defence, especially if he’s managed by someone he already knows.

At Arsenal, on the other hand, it’s highly unlikely that Martinez will displace either Gabriel Magalhaes or Ben White in the heart of the defence. That could give United the edge in the race to sign him this summer.
