Roberto Martinez responds to question about taking Newcastle job
The transfer and manager rumour mill is already going into a bit of overdrive, after Newcastle United were finally taken over yesterday.
Amanda Staveley’s consortium got their hands on the Magpies and finally released the club from Mike Ashley’s grasp. All in all, despite off-field and political question marks, it was a good day for the Toon Army.
Of course, the big question now will be how long does Steve Bruce last as manager. Bruce is already under pressure, and has admitted he knows he could lose his job.
, is former Everton manager Roberto Martinez. He’s now in charge of Belgium, but has been tipped for a return to club football.
Indeed, Martinez was asked about the Newcastle job last night following Belgium’s 3-2 loss to France. However, the Spaniard was tight-lipped in his response.
“Well as you can imagine that’s…you shouldn’t ask me about rumours after…after a game,” Martinez said. )
Martinez knows the Premier League well following spells with Wigan and Everton. According to , the Spaniard has won 81 games in the English top flight, losing 107.
TBR’s View: Martinez a long-term appointment for Newcastle
He’s a good manager Roberto Martinez. He gets some bad press for the job he’s done with a massively talented Belgium side, but he is a top coach.
But he is also a long-term appointment. There’ll be no quick fix under Martinez at Newcastle. He takes time to embed his methods, get the right players, and eventually play the way he wants to play.
Of course, the noises coming from the new consortium is that this is indeed a long-term project. Martinez, then, might well be the man.
