Robbie Savage questions whether or not £25m Chelsea player is good enough for the top level

Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool at the weekend, and after the game, the knives were out for Robert Sanchez.

The Spaniard didn’t have the best game ever. He nearly gave away a penalty in the second-half, which was overturned by VAR, while he was indecisive in terms of coming off his line for the second goal.

Sanchez has been criticised on a number of occasions this season, and speaking on BBC 606, Robbie Savage has questioned the former Brighton man.

Savage says that top teams need top goalkeepers to challenge at the top, and he questioned whether or not Sanchez actually fits into that bracket.

Robbie Savage questions Robert Sanchez

The pundit shared his verdict on Sanchez.

Savage says that the Chelsea ace could’ve been a bit braver for Curtis Jones’ winning goal, and queried whether or not the man is a top goalkeeper.

“I tell you what, Chelsea, the goalkeeper, Chris, for the second, can he be a little bit braver, do you think? Can he come out and spread himself, you know, a bit like Schmeichel used to? Arms are by the side,” Savage said.

You know, listen, I think Liverpool have got a top class goalkeeper, Alisson obviously didn’t play. City have got a top class goalkeeper, Arsenal have got a top class goalkeeper, Villa have, have Chelsea, that’s the question, have Chelsea? That’s the question, have Chelsea?”

Chelsea have other goalkeepers

Sanchez has been a weak link in this Chelsea team this season, but, luckily, Chelsea do have other options.

The Blues have no fewer than eight goalkeepers on their books right now, and while some of them are out on loan and some of them are ageing veterans, Enzo Maresca does have long-term options here.

The likes of Gabriel Slonina, Mike Penders and Filip Jorgensen are all waiting for opportunities in this Chelsea team, and their chances may not be too far away.

Enzo Maresca was very excited about working with Sanchez when he got the job at Stamford Bridge, but, unfortunately, this hasn’t turned out to be a match made in heaven.

Chelsea may well need a new goalkeeper in the future, and their replacement for Sanchez might already be on their books.

The Blues are much improved this season, but they may not be able to push for major honours until their goalkeeping situation is more stable.
