Robbie Keane comments on Liverpool youngster Caoimhin Kelleher after win over Wolves

that he thinks Liverpool youngster Caoimhin Kelleher could become Ireland’s number one goalkeeper and replace West Ham United veteran Darren Randolph – after his breakthrough form at Anfield.

Kelleher, 21, managed four appearances for Liverpool’s first team last season – three of which came in the Carabao Cup, including the 5-0 loss to Aston Villa and penalty-shootout win over Arsenal. This time around, he has made more of an impact.

Indeed, Kelleher started against Ajax in the Champions League and made a few excellent saves to keep a clean sheet. It saw him retain his place against Wolves on Sunday with Alisson injured – and he kept another clean sheet during the 4-0 win.

Before the match, ex-Liverpool striker Keane made an exciting prediction about Kelleher at an international level – a goalkeeper who has already been called up by Ireland’s senior side, remaining an unused substitute for their past eight fixtures.

“I watched him last week against Ajax and his performance was incredible,” . “He is certainly one we are talking about for Ireland’s number one jersey.

“He’s very technical, very good with his feet. He can pull off some saves. After losing Shay Given and with Darren Randolph coming towards the end of his career, to have this lad coming through is great.”

TBR’s view – Kelleher is surely second-choice for Liverpool

Given that Adrian has made numerous errors since joining the club on a free in the summer of 2019, perhaps the up-and-coming Kelleher is now second choice. Given his ability with the ball, which is superior to Adrian, he should be – if he is not already.

Clearly, the Irish stopper is a sensational talent. But he needs the chance to get regular game time and even if he is second choice – will he get that at Liverpool? To maximise his potential, Kelleher may feel that even being second choice, might not be enough.
