Robbie Fowler says one Liverpool player simply failed to do ‘what PL players should be able’ to do today

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has criticised Joe Gomez for the role he played in the Reds conceding to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges fell to a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Premier League newcomers at the City Ground.

Liverpool were poor, spurning numerous good chances and failing to make the most of their dominance.

The Reds had over 75 percent possession, made 681 passes and won 11 corners during the match.

Liverpool also had 15 efforts, but just seven were on target, and they were made to pay for their wastefulness.

Meanwhile, at the back, Gomez flattered to deceive in a display which saw him make several mistakes.

Despite having plenty of space just inside the Forest half, Gomez was caught on the ball by Taiwo Awoniyi.

The 25-year-old cynically hauled the Forest forward down to give away a free-kick.

From the set-piece, the hosts got the ball to Steve Cook, who crossed for Awoniyi to open the scoring at the second attempt.

And Fowler, speaking on BT Sport – as transcribed by – didn’t like what he saw from Gomez.

Asked on if Gomez’ error which resulted in that free-kick summed up Liverpool’s day, former Reds striker Fowler added: “Yes, it did.

“He’s got loads of time. He’s got 10 yards of space and all of a sudden it becomes a battle.

“He gives the free-kick away, he gets a yellow card. He has literally got 10 yards of space.

“Premier League players should be able to find whatever pass they need [in that position].”

Liverpool appeared to have turned a corner, but this latest setback is nothing short of demoralising.

The Reds went into the game off the back of wins against Rangers, Manchester City, West Ham over the past fortnight.

Now, Klopp has to rally his troops in wake of falling further behind in the Premier League title race.
