Riyad Mahrez sends two-word message to Leeds United man after FA Cup display this weekend

Leeds United will need a replay next week at Elland Road to try and get past Championship side Cardiff City once again.

They rescued a 2-2 draw in the second-half of their match on Sunday, thanks to goals from Rodrigo Moreno and Sonny Perkins.

Leeds fans got to see their first glimpse of new signing Maximilian Wober at the weekend.

Jesse Marsch was impressed with his leadership as he helped inspire the Premier League side’s comeback.

Perkins scoring his first senior goal for Leeds is also a big moment, and a sign that another of Leeds’s young forwards is ready to make the step up.

There was an important FA Cup performance from one of Leeds’ players who’s currently out on loan.

Ian Poveda was on the score sheet in the FA Cup at the weekend, as his Blackpool side easily overcome Nottingham Forest.

Poveda’s time at Elland Road appears to be over, but the 22-year-old will be pleased with his goal and assist on Saturday.

He posted a picture with the caption, ‘God is Great #facup’.

Poveda received a reply from Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez who commented, ‘My guy’.

The pair played together at City before Leeds signed Poveda in 2020.

The former-England under-20 international spent time in some of England’s best academies, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Brentford.

He even had a two-year spell in La Masia before returning to the UK.

Poveda was given plenty of opportunities at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa, but never had a huge impact in the Premier League.

He spent last season on loan at Blackburn and is continuing to make an impact in the Championship this season too.

He’s managed 13 appearances for the Tangerines, but Poveda’s goal in the FA Cup was his first for the club.

With his time coming to an end at Leeds, Poveda needs to do all he can to impress before making that next step.

Whether that’s in the Premier League, the Championship, or abroad will be determined by how he fares over the next few months.
