Rio Ferdinand sends message on Twitter to Everton star after England announcement

Rio Ferdinand has sent a congratulations message to Everton defender Ben Godfrey after he was named in England’s provisional squad for Euro 2020.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has named a 33-man squad ahead of this summer’s major international tournament.

He will trim that group down to 26 players on 1 June.

Godfrey has been joined in the England camp by Everton teammates Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who are both regulars in the national squad.

Godfrey only moved to Goodison Park last year from Norwich City, but has been one of Everton’s outstanding players of the season during his first year on Merseyside.

The athletic 23-year-old defender has shown’s he’s got the versatility to slot into either full-back role if needed, but he’s a centre-back by trade.

His pace, strength and commitment is something that has seen him become a massive Everton fan favourite.

It’s a first ever call-up to England’s senior squad for Godfrey, and it’s kept him in the race to try get into the 26-man squad for the Euros.

Pundit and ex-England international Ferdinand has congratulated the youngster on .

TBR’s View:

Ferdinand is clearly a huge admirer of Godfrey, which is a massive compliment to him.

He’s already described by some Everton supporters as a captain in the making, that’s how big an impact he’s made.

It seems unlikely that he’ll be kept around for the 26-man squad, but he’s got a chance to soak up the England senior squad and perhaps he’ll make a big enough impression in training to convince Southgate.
