Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United shouldn’t sign £86m-rated star who is ideal for Tottenham

Rio Ferdinand has told his followers during a Q&A that Philippe Coutinho isn’t good enough to play for Manchester United, whilst also suggesting he’d be ideal for Tottenham.

The former Red Devils central defender made the claim after the Barcelona player had been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the weekend .

His wages would be the biggest concern for any potential suitor, with the Brazilian collecting a cool £240,000-a-week.

Ferdinand, however, believes United should steer well clear but did back Tottenham to be the perfect destination for the 27-year-old.

“At Liverpool, he was an amazing player, but since he left he hasn’t really done it yet. He struggled at Barcelona, struggled to fit in there and then he hasn’t done amazingly well at Bayern either.

“I think he’s a great player, a huge talent, I think he needs saving. Coming into the Premier League to the right team would be a saviour for him, he needs that.

“I would have said United before Bruno Fernandes turned up, but not now.

“Would he be a good addition, yes? Not Manchester United though, and he played for Liverpool so it’s a difficult one.

“Would he improve Spurs? Yes, he would, 100 per cent. People like Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Son, they’d all feed off someone like him.”

United are likely to be in the market for some players in the summer as are Jose Mourinho and Tottenham.

Flair

Coutinho’s flamboyant style would make him a decent addition and despite Ferdinand’s comments, it’s hard to imagine the ex-Liverpool player not being a regular at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team has occasionally been bland and lacking a creative spark this season and the Barcelona man would help ease that strain.

If Tottenham could land him he’d be viewed as a massive coup for them.

Mourinho’s biggest issue could be a lack of Champions League football, however.

If they don’t qualify for the elite club competition then signing players of Coutinho’s ilk could prove an impossible mission.
