‘He was immense’: Rio Ferdinand says Newcastle 22-year-old was brilliant against West Ham

Newcastle United continued to pick up points in the Premier League and Rio Ferdinand believes that Joe Willock getting on the scoresheet is a huge boost for the club.

Willock squeezed home an effort to draw level in East London as the Magpies once again picked up a valuable point in their fight against relegation. They look increasingly likely to stay up now, with Eddie Howe getting January signings and time on the training pitch to get things going.

For Willock, though, it was a key moment in his season. After enjoying a fine goal scoring run last season, the former Arsenal man had failed to find the net all season long this time around. But that all changed against the Hammers, and Ferdinand believes that Willock’s performance in general warranted praise.

“Joe Willock, who was important last season scoring goals, he’s now scored his first goal of the season. He was immense in this game, first-half. He done really well, a big reason why they got back in the game, obviously he got the goal, but a big reason,” Ferdinand said on his podcast.

Newcastle will be hoping Willock can now go on a similar run to what he did last term.

TBR’s View: Willock And Newcastle Needed That Goal

There was a bit of pressure building on Willock you feel, especially with all the new signings at the club and more to come.

But this weekend was a big turning point. As Ferdinand said, Willock also had a fine game and his goal was the icing on the cake for what was a good all-round effort.

Newcastle will stay up now. They do need to keep picking up wins, of course. But with Willock breaking his duck, and others doing well, they should be safe.
