Rio Ferdinand hammers Tottenham defender Serge Aurier
🀅 of Tottenham Hotspur’s 7-2 defeat to Bayern Munich that Serge Aurier’s defending was “almost comical” as Serge Gnabry tore Spurs to shreds with four goals of his own.
ౠGnabry, 24, found the back of the net four times while Robert Lewandowski got a brace and Joshua Kimmich scored a superb effort from the best part of 25 yards – cancelling out Son Heung-min’s opener and Harry Kane’s penalty.
꧅Ivory Coast international Aurier struggled to cope with the pace of ex-Arsenal star Gnabry on Bayern’s left flank, as the north Londoners’ misery continues under Mauricio Pochettino. Spurs now have one point from two Champions League outings.
ꦚFerdinand was brutally honest in his assessment of Aurier’s defending against Bayern and Gnabry, claiming the Germany international “destroyed” Aurier thoughout the match as Bayern capitalised.

𝕴“He [Gnabry] destroyed Aurier,” . “As a defender I feel like you’re cheating yourself diving in, and you don’t want to run back. Aurier is quick enough to run back and get goalside because he’s sharp.
♑“But he dives in and makes Gnabry’s mind up there. If you look at Aurier’s positioning there [for Gnabry’s second and Bayern’s fourth], he’s running ahead of the ball when the ball is turned over. It is almost comical.”
TBR’s view – Is Aurier the long-term answer for Spurs at right-back?
𝓀On Tuesday night’s showing, no. The former Paris Saint-Germain defender was rash, out of position on numerous occasions and only looked good going forward. Defensively, he was a shambles.
🐠If Spurs are to build on their success last season, they need a better right-sided defender. The sale of Kieran Trippier is looking worse now, despite the England international’s performances coming under scrutiny last season.
