Many may expect Rio Ferdinand to urge the Uruguayan to opt for a move to Manchester United. However, as he dissected some of the issues surrounding Erik ten Hag’s men, he admitted that there is little reason for him to join his former club right now.

He told : “If I’m a player like [Araujo] who, I think, has every attribute to be one of the best defenders in the world, why are you going United?

“I’d be looking at Varane and going, bruv, if he can go United and get benched for a left-back, for an old vet Jonny Evans, an old ex-player who’s come back for his twilight years, and then someone who used to be captain who was left out for 18 months, who’s back in form now and playing, I can’t go there and risk my life and risk my career.”

Defender’s warning says a lot

Certainly, Manchester United have surely got an uphill battle on their hands if they are going to make a move for Araujo.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle are all moving in the right direction. Both the Gunners and the Reds are going after the Premier League title this season. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s potential is clear to see under their current owners.

Manchester United will always stand a chance of luring the best players in the world to Old Trafford. It says a lot that it feels like another terrible season. And yet, they sit sixth in the league.

However, it is telling that Ferdinand is not convinced that Araujo moving to Manchester United would be the best move for him right now.
