Rio Ferdinand backs £200k-a-week Manchester United player to shine v Luton

Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has backed Harry Maguire to impress in this weekend’s Premier League meeting with Luton Town.

Ferdinand, speaking on , believes the Red Devils defender should do well as it’s “the game for him”.

Man United are in great form at present, winning their last three Premier League games in a row and remaining unbeaten so far in 2024.

Up next for Erik ten Hag‘s charges is a trip to Kenilworth Road on Sunday afternoon, where they’ll be up against a side fighting hard for their Premier League lives.

Luton are a direct team. According to , around eight per cent of Luton’s passes this season have been sent into the opponent’s box – the only team with a higher proportion are Everton.

They’re also very effective with it. Prior to the Sheffield United loss, they had scored a goal for every 15.8 touches they have in the opponent’s box. Only Newcastle and Wolves are more efficient.

With that in mind, Maguire‘s height and heading prowess mean he should be suited to dealing with the Luton threat.

“I’m going to go out and say United definitely win that game,” said Ferdinand. “Because I think if they’re going to play Maguire at the back, that’s the game for him.

“Defend your box, the ball’s going to be launched in there, a couple of big boys and bodies to fight… I think it’s his game.”

Harry Maguire can help Manchester United overcome Luton Town

Maguire has split opinion during his time at Manchester United overall, but lately he has really turned his form around and is now a rock at the back for the Red Devils.

The £200,000-a-week man () will hopefully carry on the good work and, as Ferdinand suggested, he certainly has the traits to help his side get the better of Luton this weekend.
