Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch discuss importance of Liverpool star Jordan Henderson

that Liverpool are a better team with captain Jordan Henderson in the side and underlined the midfielder’s importance to Jurgen Klopp’s side – stating every team needs a player like Henderson.

Henderson, 30, played just over an hour of Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Atalanta on Tuesday night as Diogo Jota netted a stunning hat-trick. The Liverpool skipper kept his side solid throughout, helping keep a third consecutive clean sheet in Europe.

The former Sunderland midfielder – who has now clocked up 372 appearances for Liveprool since his £16million () move in 2011 – remains a crucial part of the Liverpool side and his importance has grown since Fabinho was ruled out with an injury.

Both Ferdinand and Crouch have underlined Henderson’s importance before the 5-0 win, which he then showed on Tuesday night during the impressive win. Crouch claimed Henderson remains underrated, labelling his Liverpool spell as “magnificent”.

“Liverpool are a better team with him in them,” “He’s become a top captain, he had big shoes to fill but he is a fantastic captain. He is highly underrated. What he has done is magnificent. You need someone to organise and he does that.”

“You need someone with that level-headedness, he’s calm. He senses danger, he is the security and protection for the back line. Every team needs a player with an element of selflessness. Plugs the gaps, every team needs a player like him.”

TBR’s view – How long can Henderson continue to shine for Liverpool?

Now 30, Henderson will turn 31 next summer but he is showing no signs of slowing down. With 56 England caps to his name, Henderson is well on course to exceed 50 appearances in all competitions this term – for club and country.

Liverpool need a leader like Henderson, on and off the pitch. He is difficult to replace. Keeping him going for as long as possible is crucial – and international retirement in the next two or three years will be pivotal to maintaining his levels of performance.
