‘Right up there’: Rangers legend compares ‘sensational’ McGregor stop to iconic World Cup save
Rangers’ outfield players may not have been at their best for large periods of their Europa League first leg, but their number one outdid himself.
In the final minute of normal time, Slavia Prague’s Lukáš Masopust rose to head a firm header towards the bottom corner.
It seemed destined to nestle in the net, but Allan McGregor somehow managed to keep it out as Rangers left Prague with a 1-1 draw.
Light work for Allan McGregor 🤷♂️
A stunning save from the Rangers goalkeeper in the 90th minute! 💪

The 39-year-old has been a major part of Rangers’ success this season, and his heroics ensured Steven Gerrard’s men remain unbeaten in 12 European matches.
Speaking after the match, former Rangers stars Alan Hutton and Ally McCoist were stunned, with the latter comparing McGergor’s stop to England keeper Gordon Banks’ iconic stop from Pele in the 1970 World Cup.
After host Darrell Currie suggested that it may have been “the moment of his career”, Hutton replied: “It’s definitely up there. I mean, he’s got a catalogue of saves of that quality, but to get a hand on it, and not just that, he saves it with the underside of his palm, and then grab it out is unbelievable, honestly”.
McCoist added: “That save is as good a save as I’ve seen in years.”
After Hutton said it “gets better every time I see it”, McCoist continued: “I keep saying it, getting to it is one thing, but stopping it and retrieving it and it not getting away from him is remarkable.”
Currie asked if it could be considered “one of the best saves ever”, to which Hutton responded: “I think it’s got to be up there, because that header is a bullet header.
“It’s on target, it’s in the bottom corner. We’re all thinking goal.”

McCoist pointed out that “It looks behind him a little bit”, and Hutton replied: “It is, and not only does he get a hand on it, he actually claws it out.
“It’s unbelievable. That’s right up there for me.”
The legendary Rangers goalscorer then proclaimed: “I’m all in. I’m allowed to get carried away this evening.
“It’s gone from one of the best saves this season to one of the best saves ever. I don’t care. It’s up there.”

Currie went on to call it “the defining moment of this match and of this tie”, before McCoist said: “Brilliant header. He should be away celebrating. It’s behind him! What a save.”
Asked if he was going for “the best save ever” yet, McCoist replied: “It’s up there. I’m thinking Banks. It’s Banksy obviously that’s the one everybody talks about”.
After Currie pointed out that Banks put his over the bar while McGregor held his, McCoist said: “He held it. I mean, dear me. I’m attempting, believe it or not, not to get carried away and I’m finding it difficult. It’s a sensational save.”
