‘Right now’: David Ornstein shares what he’s hearing about Ruben Neves and Newcastle

Newcastle United need to bring in a new midfielder in January.

Sandro Tonali’s recent ban has left the Magpies looking rather light in the middle of the park, but luckily, we’re only a few weeks away from the window opening and help could be on the way.

One player who has been strongly with a move to Newcastle is Ruben Neves.

The Portuguese midfielder moved to Al Hilal just this summer, but a move back to England has been touted as Newcastle look to use their Saudi connections to get a loan move over the line.

However, the Premier League could soon look to block these types of moves between clubs that have connected ownerships.

David Ornstein has been speaking about this topic on the , and, interestingly, he’s also added that there’s currently no suggestion that Neves even wants to leave Saudi Arabia for Newcastle, so this move may not even have legs to begin with.

No suggestion Neves wants to move

Ornstein shared what he knows about Neves

“Right now it’s possible for any team to strike a loan. We don’t have this rule right now. Maybe it will be outlawed, but the caveat I would add is that we’ve had nothing to suggest that Ruben Neves is unhappy at Al Hilal. Al Hilal are a big club in Saudi Arabia, they have a big fanbase, big money and they’re trying to grow the league, I don’t think they would want to lose Ruben Neves, so it’s not as clear cut as saying that if he’s available he’s going to Newcastle,” Ornstein said.

Upheaval

Say what you will about the Saudi League and the competitiveness of the teams and the standard of the football, from a purely personal perspective, we can understand why Neves may not want to move in January.

He’s only just left England for Saudi Arabia where he’s still trying to settle in and build what is a new life for himself and his family. Why would he want to leave after just a few months?

As Ornstein says, Al Hilal aren’t a Sunday League team. They have the likes of Neymar and Aleksandar Mitrovic on their books, they’re genuinely a good side.

Neves surely wouldn’t want this much upheaval so shortly after moving to the middle east.
