Ridiculous Mike Ashley policy could cost Newcastle Duvan Zapata this summer

Newcastle United have recently been linked with a move for Duvan Zapata.

The striker is currently enjoying a very fruitful loan spell at Atalanta, where he has scored a highly impressive 25 goals across all competitions so far this season.

The Colombian has really caught the eye as a result of his goalscoring prowess, and Atalanta apparently want to seal his permanent transfer before selling him for a higher figure.

Newcastle fans will be hoping that their club can secure Zapata’s services as clearly he is a striker that knows where the goal is.

Sadly for them though, it might simply be a non-starter.

TBR’s view

Rafa Benitez is still waiting for an answer about whether he can have more leeway over transfers this summer (assuming, of course, the Spaniard agrees an extension).

Apparently Mike Ashley has made it clear he wants sign youngsters rather than players in their late 20s with less resale value.

Despite Zapata’s obvious class, the fact that he is 28 will make any deal highly unlikely.

It is a shame for the fans that such policy is in effect, as Zapata is the exact kind of player Newcastle could do with – Salomon Rondon has been excellent, but is less prolific than his fellow South American. Goalscoring has been the Magpies’ achilles heel for the past couple of season.
