Richie Wellens claims Leeds winger Jordan Stevens is set to join Swindon on loan

Richie Wellens that Swindon Town are very close to signing Leeds United winger Jordan Stevens after chasing the youngster for a number of weeks.

Stevens has made a handful of first-team appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since joining in 2018. His most recent outing came on the final day of last season as the Whites rounded off their promotion-winning campaign.

With the club now back in the Premier League, it is little surprise to see some of their young players leave on a temporary basis. Ryan Edmondson and Rafa Mujica are amongst those to have sealed loan moves.

And it appears that Stevens could be next. Robins boss Wellens suggested his side are expecting to add the 20-year-old to their ranks in the next week or so.

“Jordan Stevens, we’re very close to,” . “I think we’ve more or less done it. Leeds have got an issue in terms of releasing him at the moment because they’re trying to get someone in. And Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t let players out very easily. He is the head of Leeds, and only his say so will release players.

“We’ve been after him for six or seven weeks. He will join us on the 21st September.”

Although Wellens does not specify, it looks to be a safe bet to assume that Stevens will only be loaned out. , and you would imagine that the Whites would be a lot less reluctant to let Stevens go previously if they were willing to sanction a permanent exit.

It should be a good move for the youngster. And perhaps there is reason for Leeds fans to get a little excited following Wellens’s comments.

The Swindon boss initially suggests that the reason Leeds have not allowed Stevens to go up until this point is the fact that they are waiting to make a signing.

Of course, the situation may have changed and the Whites may no longer be looking for an addition. But perhaps Stevens being allowed to leave on loan hints that Leeds may have made some progress on the transfer front.
