Richard Keys names the Manchester United player who was the ‘only positive’ v Liverpool
Richard Keys is never one to be shy of an opinion and he’s picked out what he thinks is the only positive for Manchester United after drawing with Liverpool.
Keys was critical, alongside Andy Gray, of United’s tactics at Anfield as they managed to grind out a 0-0 draw.
Erik ten Hag deployed his team in a deep defensive shape and in the main, it worked.
However, Keys was not impressed at all. And writing in his column today, he backed up that stance by insisting the only positive for United was the performance of Scottish midfielder, Scott McTominay.
Richard Keys praises Scott McTominay after United v Liverpool
Writing in his latest post, the former Sky Sports anchor had the following to say on United and McTominay.
“The only positive I could see for Utd was Scott McTominay’s performance. He’s not one for putting in a shift defensively. I’ve heard him described as ‘economical’ in that respect. He’s a 10 really, which is how Scotland use him. United should as well now. Play him in that role and give him the armband permanently. He spoke so well after the game. He IS a leader – everything that the moody, petulant Fernandes isn’t. It’s strange how quickly things change in football. If West Ham had come up with £30m on deadline day – and they hadn’t done other business – McTominay would be a Hammer now,” Keys said.

McTominay continues to shine for United
This is a fair comment from Keys when it comes to McTominay. He has been good for some time and he deserves his chance as United skipper.
Of course, the counter-argument here is that there was more than one positive for United. At the end of the day, they stifled a Liverpool side in form and got a good point at a tough ground.
Any team in the league would take 0-0 away at Liverpool and you can’t really grumble at it if you are a Manchester United fan.
For McTominay, it felt like a big day for him personally. But we all know Fernandes will be back as captain and in the summer, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Scot look to move on again anyway.
