Rhian Brewster among six Liverpool wonderkids pictured training with the first-team
Liverpool’s training pictures have emerged ahead of their trip to Italy. The Reds face Napoli on Tuesday night and Jurgen Klopp has included six youth team players in his training session.
Only two of those – Rhian Brewster and Caoimhin Kelleher – have been named in Klopp’s 20-man squad for the trip to Napoli. But the others are clearly highly-rated. TBR takes a look at the six players and their first-team prospects.
Rhian Brewster
Brewster has been promoted to Liverpool’s first-team after Divock Origi limped off against Newcastle United. The 19-year-old was due to play in the U23 game on Saturday but was removed after 15 minutes so he is fresh for Napoli.
Roberto Firmino remains the first-choice striker at Liverpool and that will not change as long as he remains fit. But Brewster has a serious chance of making his debut at some point in the near future.
Caoimhin Kelleher
Kelleher is in the squad to travel to Italy but only a sudden injury crisis would get him on the pitch. The Republic of Ireland U21 international is being taken along for the experience and he will learn from it.
The 20-year-old is Liverpool’s fourth choice but Alisson Becker is injured. Adrian will start, Andy Lonergan will be waiting in reserve and Kelleher will be gaining more experience by coming along.
Harvey Elliott
Harvey Elliott joined from Fulham in the summer and he has been training regularly with the first-team. The 16-year-old already has some first-team experience under his belt for the Cottagers but he is a youth team player for the Reds at the moment.
The England youth international was an unused substitute in the Super Cup and he recently scored for the U23 team in the EFL Trophy. He is an exciting young winger who could make his debut for Liverpool in the cup this season.
Sepp van den Berg
Sepp van den Berg is another youngster who joined in the summer. The 17-year-old already has plenty of first-team experience in Holland with PEC Zwolle. But he is yet to make his Liverpool debut.
Klopp clearly rates him highly. Despite his young age, van den Berg is in the Liverpool Champions League squad to provide cover at right-back and centre-back. But he is still behind Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren for now.
Curtis Jones
Curtis Jones is showing signs that he could be the next big thing at Liverpool. The 18-year-old is running the midfield in the U23 team and he is being tipped for a bright future.
Klopp is a big fan and he has been training with the senior squad. The England U19 midfielder is a central midfielder who might get a chance in the EFL Cup to test his first-team readiness.
Ki-Jana Hoever
Ki-Jana Hoever is not in Liverpool’s Champions League squad but he is still training with the first-team. The Dutchman has played one senior game and he looked impressive as a ball-playing centre-back.
However, with van den Berg now seemingly ahead of him, Hoever is the sixth-choice centre-back at Liverpool. Time is still on the 17-year-old’s side but first-team chances might be unrealistic this season.
