Reviewing a quiet transfer window at Huddersfield Town

On the back of a very quiet January transfer window for Huddersfield Town, David Wagner revealed that he found the way the English fans and media approached the window is far different from the process in Germany saying that there is “more pressure” to bring players in.

Wagner stands by his decision to hold off any signings by saying that any potential deal was to benefit the club in the long term and any player the club does sign he would have to be 100 percent convinced.

The Yorkshire club’s transfer targets were not available for transfer according to Wagner which is why the club has signed three loan deals to help the club for the rest of the season, where Town are still in a relegation battle sitting 7 points clear of the drop zone.

Huddersfield have signed forward Elvis Manu from Brighton to bolster an attacking line up who are struggling for form in the Championship. Manu is a Dutch U21 international who has not been in favour at the AMEX stadium since his arrival in the summer. As the Dutchman has already played for Feyenoord and Brighton this season he is limited to an emergency loan until 8th May. Wagner believes Manu is a versatile player who can slot in various positions in the line-up which is key to the way he wants the team to play.

Wagner has recalled Jordy Hiwula from his loan spell at Wigan Athletic where he spent the first half of the season scoring six goals from 17 matches. The manager believes that he is ready to return to the John Smith’s Stadium and could feature on Saturday against Preston.

More good news for Town fans, Joe Lolley, one of The Terrier’s best young players has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until the summer of 2019, securing a key attacking player to ensure their survival in the Championship come May.

Huddersfield are in a mini crisis having lost the last three matches including a disappointing defeat in the FA Cup replay against Reading which left fans angry at the decisions by the match officials in both matches in the tie. The Terriers were 2-0 up in the first half before Jonathon Hogg was shown a straight red card. Reading took the numerical advantage as they put five past Joe Murphy in the Huddersfield goal.

Since the FA Cup defeat Huddersfield were involved in two close matches against Brighton and Cardiff which saw them lose both fixtures by one goal. Despite the defeat the club are still heading in the right direction since the arrival of Wagner as they are providing fans with fast and exciting games against some of the top teams in the league.

Wagner’s side have a golden opportunity to get back to winning ways on Saturday with a trip to fellow Championship strugglers Preston North End, managed by former Town boss Simon Grayson. Fans will be expecting goals with Town’s new attacking force against a side they beat convincingly in December.

The fans have a right to be optimistic in the coming months with their side playing entertaining football under a manager who seems to have a lot of knowledge about building a strong squad and will surely be looking for a mid-table finish this season avoiding the drop into League 1.
