Respected BBC journalist outlines possible transfer plans for Liverpool this summer
Respected BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein has suggested Liverpool are looking to make two signings this summer.
The Reds shelled out big bucks last year on the likes of Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri, but there will apparently not be a repeat of that kind of spending in 2019.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Ornstein revealed (): “They’re looking at one or a maximum of two signings unless there’s an injury or a player that wants out like Philippe Coutinho.”
“At left-back they need cover, that’s they key area, with Alberto Moreno and Nathaniel Clyne leaving.
“They also want a possible attacker to replace Daniel Sturridge if he leaves but once again it won’t be a No 9. It will be a versatile attacker.”
Full-back Moreno has recently been linked with a move to Benfica, while striker Sturridge is expected to depart for free when his contract expires.
TBR’s view
Liverpool surely will not be splashing out in the same fashion as last summer.
Their squad has shown it is able to contest a Premier League title race, and it makes sense that Jurgen Klopp really only wants to replace players that appear set to leave.
Sturridge, who earns £120,000-a-week , has never been favoured by Klopp and it’s hard to see him signing a new deal at this late stage, so one has to imagine a striker will be coming in at Anfield.
Moreno has not shown himself to be suitable backup for Andy Robertson, and his contract also runs out this summer.
It is therefore reasonable to expect two new additions at the club as Ornstein has suggested.
