Reported West Ham target Chuba Akpom scores in Champions League clash with Ajax

Last week it was reported that West Ham United were looking at former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom as a potential new recruit before the close of the summer transfer window.

that West Ham were looking for further striking recruits after watching the likes of Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic, Lucas Perez and Jordan Hugill leave the club this summer.

Despite bringing in Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt, Akpom was being eyed up as a £5 million option to further strengthen their attacking depth.

With good reason as well. Whilst Akpom never lived up to his promise at The Emirates Stadium, he has found form in Greece with PAOK Salonika. The 23-year-old played his way into the starting XI with PAOK, scoring eight goals and helping them claim the Greek title in an unbeaten season.

Now he has started the new season with a bang. PAOK faced off with last season’s semi-finalists Ajax in a Champions League qualifying match last night.

PAOK bravely fought to a 2-2 draw in the clash, as they hope to cause an upset and send the Dutch giants crashing at the Johan Cruyff Arena in a weeks time.

Akpom showed West Ham just what he is capable of with a strong performance, including scoring the club’s initial equalising goal.

Hakim Ziyech had previously given Ajax the lead. But Akpom turned in a left-wing cross to send the home fans into raptures. Leo Batos later gave PAOK the lead but Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s fortunate equaliser handed Ajax the second-leg initiative.

West Ham’s interest in Akpom has not been widely reported since, so it remains to be seen if they build upon the initial report. But scoring against last season’s Champions League semi-finalists will not do his chances of a West Ham move any harm.

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in a move for Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne, according to reports. that Aston Villa could be about to make an £11 million offer for the player, who only joined the Turkish giants in January.
