Reported Southampton target Weston McKennie has previously admitted Premier League ‘dream’

Southampton may have found themselves a replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the form of Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie. 

this week, which claims that the Saints are keen on the American international. 

Hojbjerg is set to join Tottenham or Everton this summer, with the former Saints captain transfer-listed after not signing an extension to his current St Mary’s deal which expires in 2021. 

McKennie, an energetic midfielder who can also operate at full-back or on the wing, would be a perfect recruit to replace the Dane. 

Hasenhuttl will know McKennie well from his time managing RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, where he came up against the American on one occasion in 2017. 

But McKennie, that his ‘next goal’ was to make a ‘dream’ move to England will not come cheap. 

A has priced the player at £22.5 million. 

Southampton should have no problem matching that asking price should they sell Hojbjerg for the price they are hoping to in the coming weeks. 

At that point, Southampton would be right to bring in a player who is not only a perfect replacement, but can provide cover in a number of positions.
