Reported January target Che Adams shows Southampton what they are missing as Danny Ings limps off injured

Southampton endured a frustrating Saturday afternoon against Burnley, while reported January target Che Adams added to his burgeoning reputation.

In the Premier League on Saturday, Southampton were denied a win by a late Ashley Barnes penalty.

Burnley scored in the 94th minute which cost Southampton two points. The Saints could have moved four points clear of the drop zone if they held on for the win.

Meanwhile, in the Championship, Birmingham City moved to within four points of the play-off zone with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

And Adams got on the score sheet, securing the three points with a 93rd minute penalty to cap another good performance.

It was the 22-year-old striker’s 16th goal in 30 Championship matches. Southampton made an approach for Adams in January () but the move failed to materialise.

But Adams continued to show why Premier League clubs were interested in him as he moved to fifth in the Championship top scorer charts.

And an injury to Danny Ings made the afternoon even more frustrating for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton side, who are now without their top striker.

Given Ings’ injury record, Adams should have been a priority for Southampton at the end of January. But now, they will have to hope they can snap him up next summer instead.
