It was noted by the Express that many of the club’s other targets have been deemed unobtainable. So some Tottenham fans may have expected the club to ramp up their efforts to sign the 28-year-old.

that Wolfsburg have promised the Netherlands international that he can go if there is serious interest this summer.

It is suggested that the Bundesliga side want at least £27.5 million for the forward.

Interestingly however – given the promise that they have made to Weghorst – Kicker adds that his club are very relaxed about his future. That would seemingly suggest that they are not expecting to lose last season’s top goalscorer.

TBR View: Weghorst asking price always made Spurs move look unlikely

It remains to be seen if any club – including Tottenham – makes a last-ditch move. There are always sides who end up making big offers right at the end of the window through fear that their squad may be in trouble without further additions.

Mourinho does need a striker. But perhaps it would be fair to say that Wolfsburg’s asking price always made a move somewhat unlikely.

Weghorst would be coming in to feature as Harry Kane’s understudy. And unlike some of the other names to have been linked with Tottenham, he is not really a player who gets in the side in any other role.

If Spurs are going to spend around £30 million on a new striker, it will surely be spent on a player who offers versatility as well as quality in front of goal.

It would be naive to say categorically that Weghorst will not end the window as a Tottenham player. But you can certainly see why Wolfsburg seem relaxed at this stage.
