Report: William Saliba to stay at Arsenal, club rule out summer sale

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta appear to have ruled out a transfer for William Saliba this summer, according to a report from .

The report claims that Arsenal will welcome Saliba back to the squad this summer. The Gunners will reject any advances for the Frenchman, with reporting that Bayer Leverkusen have shown interest.

But appears that Saliba is staying put, for now at least. Chris Wheatley, who is the chief reporter on Arsenal for Football.London, also backed this up in his latest .

Saliba was bought for around £27m but has since failed to tie down any sort of regular place in the Arsenal squad. He has been on loan with Nice this season, impressing in Ligue 1 and enhancing his reputation further.

The young Frenchman is said to earn around £40k-a-week with the Gunners, on a contract running until 2024, per .

Mikel Arteta had previously spoken about Saliba and how he saw him as an ‘important player for the future’.

This summer will give the Spaniard the perfect chance to assess Saliba’s progress. With David Luiz leaving, there is an opening for the young defender to seize upon.

No Arsenal transfer for Saliba but a big summer ahead

It’s all well and good Mikel Arteta giving Saliba a chance but the defender also has to seize his moment and impress from the outset.

It’s clear that last summer, he wasn’t ready. Whether that was in terms of ability, fitness, or just maturity, Arsenal were clearly not inclined to give him his chance.

But a £27m investment needs helping along and this is what Arteta will, hopefully, do in the summer. Saliba has had a big season and looked a lot better than he did before.

If he can just start well in the summer and learn from those around him, then Arsenal should have a fine defender on their hands.
