Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Dan James joined Fulham from Leeds United on transfer deadline day, and a report on has explained why.

The Welshman was a target for Spurs in this window, with Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol revealing that the winger is someone Antonio Conte ‘likes a lot’. However, the 24-year-old decided to join Fulham last night.

Why Dan James joined Fulham instead of Tottenham

Tottenham were relatively quiet on transfer deadline day. Many people expected them to sign at least one new player, but no deal materialised in the end.

The reason James decided to join Fulham over Tottenham, according to the report, is that he would play almost every single game there. That was extremely important to him with the World Cup coming up in November.

If James had joined Tottenham instead, his game time would’ve been very limited and he probably wouldn’t even have been the second choice as a winger.

Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski are Conte’s first-choice wide men, while Richarlison is the immediate backup on both flanks.

That wouldn’t have changed if James had made the move to North London, even though he’s a very talented player himself. That may be why he picked Fulham over Spurs, claims that report.

TBR View:

The only way James would’ve fit in at Tottenham is as a right-wing-back, but even then, there are question marks over his defensive qualities.

The 24-year-old is a ‘brilliant’ player with the ball at his feet, and his pace is his biggest asset. He can terrorise defences on his day, but can he hold his own against some of the best wingers in the country when they’re charging at him?

We don’t think so!

A move to Fulham, where he will surely play higher up the pitch, makes a lot more sense for James, and he really could thrive under Marco Silva at Craven Cottage.
