Report: West Ham told they will have to spend £11.5m to sign Montiel
that River Plate want as much as £11.5million if they are to sell right-back Gonzalo Montiel before the end of the January window – amid reports that West Ham have tabled an offer.
Montiel, 24, has emerged as one of River Plate’s best players and up there with the best defenders yet to move to one of Europe’s best five leagues. He has clocked up 110 matches for River, as well as earning six Argentina caps.
A previous report from has claimed that West Ham, Lyon, Roma and Bologna have all made offers for Montiel. Whether that is a pre-contract agreement, or a transfer fee to sign him this month, remains to be seen.
The latest report now claims West Ham will have to spend between £10.7million and £11.5million to get Montiel this month despite his contract expires in June. Montiel wants to leave this month, and Roma have bid £6.25million.

TBR’s view – Montiel a top signing, but worth the fee?
West Ham need Montiel. Vladimir Coufal has been a good signing. He is solid, and gives you a consistent 7/10 every week. But he lacks going forward, that little bit of extra quality to take West Ham forward.
Montiel is capable of eight and nine. Aggressive, skillful and as good going forward as he is in defence, Montiel would be a superb signing. But should they get him for nothing, on a pre-contract, or spend big this month?
If Montiel had three years left on his contract, he would be worth £20million or more. Getting him on a pre-contract agreement would be ideal, but if other clubs move this month, then so should West Ham.
