What’s the story?
According to the publication, the Irons moved onto Nikola Vlasic as a result. The Hammers completed a deadline day move for the Croatia international, costing the club plus add-ons.
The England international was the club’s primary target during the window. But, with just a year left on his current contract, the Hammers saw it as an expensive move.
Vlasic has previous experience in the Premier League after spending two years at Everton. However, he made just in the top flight before departing for CSKA Moscow, where he shone.
The ace since his move to Russia in the summer of 2019.
However, Lingard did excel for David Moyes during his loan spell last season. His goals directly led the club to the Europa League group stages; West Ham’s first time qualifying for the competition.
Would Lingard have been a better option?
There are many reasons why the east Londoners would target Vlasic rather than Lingard.
For starters, the 28-year-old has just one year left on his contract. Paying £30m for his services seems a tad unnecessary. But is that really the case given the Irons’ needs?
And then you compare him to the Croat.
Vlasic is only 23 and, at £25.7m, is a far wiser investment, or so it seems.
There are still questions over whether the player will succeed at the London Stadium. After all, he struggled to make the grade at Everton under Marco Silva, so who is to say he will succeed this time around?
Signing Lingard instead of Vlasic would have been a better move. Yes, it would cost more for a player nearing the end of his prime, but, for what he would bring, it was a risk well worth taking.
