Apparently River Plate are adamant they want to keep Montiel, who is a key member of their starting XI.

TyC Sports say West Ham had proposed an initial six-month loan, with a view to a permanent purchase for £10 million in the summer.

That was never going to get them their man, with River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo saying in a recent press conference (): “There are clubs all over the world interested in River players and not everyone agrees on the economic point of view.

“If you come with a loan offer for a valuable player of ours, I say ’thank you, but no’. It is not what we want.

“It would be ridiculous if we agreed to start a conversation with a proposal like that, as also happened with Quintero.”

The Hammers are seemingly trying to plan for the future, with veteran Pablo Zabaleta leaving at the end of the season, possibly into retirement ().

TBR’s view – Montiel one to watch

It seems as though River Plate won’t be entertaining any interest this month since it’s mid-season and they are challenging for the title.

West Ham should think about a summer approach for the player with the ageing Zabaleta leaving.

Montiel, who supposedly has a £17 million release clause (), is an energetic player who could throw down a better challenge to Ryan Fredericks.
