Report: West Ham have now opened talks for £30m star

West Ham United have seemingly moved a step closer to landing their first signing of the January transfer window, that they have entered talks to sign Lucas Digne from Everton.

Digne looks set to be one player who leaves Goodison Park this month. He has not featured for Rafa Benitez’s men for several weeks. And the Toffees kicked off their window with the signing of left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko.

The Frenchman is wanted by a host of clubs. It was reported on Wednesday that Newcastle hope to make Digne their next signing with Kieran Trippier all but through the door.

But it would appear that West Ham have stolen a march on their rivals in the battle to land Digne. that the Hammers have opened talks over a move for the 28-year-old.

There are a couple of major hurdles for West Ham to clear. Everton value Digne at £30 million. And the former Barcelona man earns £100,000-a-week on Merseyside.

West Ham may struggle to justify spending £30 million on Lucas Digne

Much may depend on how much David Moyes has to spend this month. But it would be a surprise to see West Ham part with £30 million to bring 28-year-old Digne to the London Stadium.

Admittedly, Digne has been impressive since moving to the Premier League. He averages an assist almost every six games.

And Moyes may feel that that experience makes a move much less of a gamble. Digne was described as ‘one of the best’ left-backs in Europe by Carlo Ancelotti just last season ().

The Hammers may ultimately view Digne’s availability as an opportunity that is simply too good to turn down.
