Report: West Ham and Southampton battle it out for Barcelona’s Junior Firpo

West Ham and Southampton are trying to finalise a transfer for Barcelona left-back Junior Firpo, according to .

The Catalan giants are confident of selling the Spanish-born ace with both English locked in talks over a deal. Barcelona are thought to be demanding a €16m (£13.8m) fee for the ace.

Firpo moved to the Camp Nou from Real Betis back in 2019, however, has struggled for first-team action. Barcelona are thought to be open to the idea of selling the defender.

The Spanish giants are in financial trouble and need to sell players this summer. However, Southampton and West Ham aren’t the only clubs interested in the star, whose attributes prove attractive.

Several Italian clubs are keen on a loan deal, but, this has been rejected with the La Liga outfit wanting a permanent transfer.

TBR View: West Ham in dire need of cover, whilst Southampton lack a quality left-back

Both the Irons and the Saints are in desperate need for a left-back this summer.

David Moyes’ side has Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku on the left side of defence. And having qualified for the Europa League, are in dire need of quality.

Meanwhile, Ralph Hasenhuttl is set to wave goodbye to Ryan Bertrand, who is leaving after more than nine years on the south coast.

It was announced back in May that the former Chelsea man will leave at the end of his contract.

Sam McQueen suffered a cruciate ligament rupture and his current return date is unknown. The move leaves the Austrian without a recognised left-back heading into next season.

Both clubs

However, given the options available to West Ham, and the form of their defensive duos, a move to Southampton may be preferable for Firpo.
