Report: West Brom’s pursuit of Matheus Pereira has stalled

According to the , West Brom’s move for Sporting winger Matheus Pereira has hit a roadblock. The Portuguese club are insisting that any loan deal for the 23-year-old includes a £9 million obligation to buy next summer. The Baggies, however, would prefer a loan switch which includes only an optional, rather than a compulsory, purchase clause. This issue has caused the transfer talks to stall.

Pereira would certainly be an exciting acquisition for West Brom. Slaven Bilic needs to inject some added attacking flair and dynamism to his squad this summer if his side are to achieve promotion back to the Premier League this season. Pereira would bring some pace and forward impetus to the Hawthorns.

The Brazilian spent last season on loan at FC Nuremberg in the Bundesliga. He showed flashes of quality in Germany, but struggled to impress consistently. He could flourish at Championship level though, and certainly has the potential to improve significantly. If he could add more consistent end product to his game then he would be a very dangerous player.

Bilic should do what he can this summer to secure Pereira’s services. However, the Baggies should be careful not to commit to spending too much next summer. If they can negotiate Sporting down from their £9 million stance, then there is the potential for some smart business to be done here.
